This JamPack has a good selection of drum loops that work great for playing along with or for piecing together an original songs. MainStage gives you a massive collection of plug-ins and sounds to fuel your performance. Fifteen new options, from Bright Country to Eighties Pop, spice up things, but they just aren't rockin' enough to make us spend 100 bucks. On Mac, the quickest way to get a slew of new sounds is buying MainStage 3 (28.99), which bundles hundreds of instruments and loops. If you're an effects-hungry guitarist, you might have fun with some of Jam Pack's effects and amp simulators. Sound packs contain sounds, loops, and other kinds of content you can use to build songs. ![]() For example, Baritone and Tenor join the Solo sax selection. After you install GarageBand, three types of additional content (collectively called content packs) are available to download in the Sound Library: sound packs, Producer packs, and Remix sessions. Similarly, instead of entirely new software instruments, you get more menu choices for the existing ones. The GarageBand loop browser still offers the same options, but Jam Pack lengthens the loop list. Since it's so expensive, you'd expect Jam Pack to act like a sixth iLife component, but the program merely gives GarageBand a shot in the arm. The package sounds enticing but, in the end, doesn't offer enough to justify its high price. Designed to give musicians and wannabe American Idols a little more material to play with, the add-on provides 2,000 loops, 100 software instruments, 100 audio-effects presets, and 15 guitar-amp settings. Apple's GarageBand Jam Pack is the $99 accompaniment to the music-recording app included in the company's iLife '04.
